Waiting on Wednesday (33)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. This week I'm waiting on

Dare You To by Katie McGarry

Dare You To (Pushing the Limits, #2)Title: Dare You To
Author: Katie McGarry
Will be published on: May 28th, 2013 (Harlequin Teen)
Series: Pushing the Limits #2
Synopsis from Goodreads: If anyone knew the truth about Beth Risk's home life, they'd send her mother to jail and seventeen-year-old Beth who knows where. So she protects her mom at all costs. Until the day her uncle swoops in and forces Beth to choose between her mom's freedom and her own happiness. That's how Beth finds herself living with an aunt who doesn't want her and going to a school that doesn't understand her. At all. Except for the one guy who shouldn't get her, but does....

Ryan Stone is the town golden boy, a popular baseball star jock-with secrets he can't tell anyone. Not even the friends he shares everything with, including the constant dares to do crazy things. The craziest? Asking out the Skater girl who couldn't be less interested in him.

But what begins as a dare becomes an intense attraction neither Ryan nor Beth expected. Suddenly, the boy with the flawless image risks his dreams-and his life-for the girl he loves, and the girl who won't let anyone get too close is daring herself to want it all...

Pushing the Limits was my favorite book last year, so of course I can't wait for this one! It's going to be amazing, I just know it!

What are you waiting on?

Top Ten Best Bookish Memories

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature created by The Broke and the Bookish. Every Tuesday has another topic and different bloggers give their top ten. I love making lists, so here's mine for this week!

This week topic is
Top Ten Best Bookish Memories

All those sweet beautiful memories with books... Even the most horrible ones make me smile! Spending hours in the library picking out books, all those hours reading them. As a little girl I went nowhere without a book. It's almost unbelievable I spend a couple of years without reading! I have many bookish memories, but here's my Top Ten!

1. My first memory
When I was around 4/5 years old I already loved books, especially Jip & Janneke (a Dutch children's book). My parents read it to me so often I new the first chapter by heart and thought that I could actually read. Every time I think about this moment I still feel proud, although now I know I couldn't read it for real! I still now the first few sentences!

2. My first "grown up" book
I've always had the habit to be the first with everything. So of course I had to be the first with reading a "grown up" book (I was 12). A horrible experience (that's why I love YA so much now;)). At first I walked row after row of library books without having any clue what to pick and than finally went home with a horror book. My mother musn't have checked what I brought home, because that book still gives me nightmares!

3. Harry Potter
When I went to secondary school (it's called middelbare school in Dutch) I stopped reading. I just had so much homework and other things to do. I haven't read in six years. Except for Harry Potter. When the hype started I loathed Harry Potter and said to everyone who wanted to hear it I would never read it. After seeing the first movie (why I went to see it I have no idea:P) I was hooked and read the first four books in a row.

4. The Lord of the Rings
In the same year I started to read Harry Potter I also read The Lord of the Rings. My grandfather had been a big fan of J.R.R. Tolkien for many years and he took me and my little sister to see the first movie. Just like with Harry Potter I was hooked and wanted to read the books. It took me a whole three months to get through them, but it's awesome to finally understand what my grandfather quoted all these years!

5. What would have been my first bookish event
When I was 16 the fifth or sixth Harry Potter book was published in Dutch. There would be a big event in the bookstore my grandmother worked and she arranged for me to be there! I was so excited and was nervous weeks in advance. I had to work first and then she would pick me up. Unfortunately I managed to slice my finger pretty bad (the top almost came off, the horror!), so I never got to go. It still breaks my heart!

6. Twilight
Yes, Twilight is one of my bookish memories. After reading almost nothing for years my grandmother gave me Twilight. She got it from a colleague, but it didn't interest her, so she gave it to me. I put it with the few books I did have on my shelves. One Sunday afternoon when I was bored I picked it up and started reading. And I haven't stopped since!

7. Getting my credit card
I never thought I would get a credit card, but when my boyfriend introduced me to the wonderful world that calls itself amazon/bookdepository I got one myself so I could order all the books I wanted. There aren't many bookstores in the Netherlands with a good English books section, so this was like heaven!

8. Working with books
In the last years I've mostly had jobs that evolved around books. Or in a bookstore or at a publishing house. I'm currently working in a bookstore again and I can't tell you enough how amazing that is. This is one big happy memory.

9. Book signings
There aren't many book signings in The Netherlands with authors that I love, so I don't really go to many of them. In the first bookstore where I worked there were a few signings. I've seen authors sitting at a table for an hour without anyone showing up. So sad! I wanted to hide every time that happened! Of course there were also many successful signings where authors had cramps at the end ;).

10. Meeting Tahereh Mafi
This is my most recent and favorite bookish memory! Meeting Tahereh Mafi last November, it was amazing! She's so nice! There was also a meet & greet and she's so patient answering all the questions. It would be amazing to go to more signings and bookish events!

That's it for me! What's your Top Ten this week?

Because it was such a quiet month I got to read a lot of books! And that's always a good thing! Hopefully February will be a bit more exciting!

Review Prophecy Girl by Faith McKay

Prophecy Girl (Lacuna Valley, #1)Title: Prophecy Girl
Author: Faith McKay
Published: November 20th, 2012
Pages: 248
Source: for review
Series:
Lacuna Valley #1

Rating: 3 stars
Synopsis from Goodreads: Ever since Samantha Winthrop's mother moved them to Lacuna Valley, supposedly in search of better weather, the list of strange questions she has no answers for has been growing out of control.

Does her little sister, Violet, have the ability to make things happen just by "praying" for them? Are Sam's dreams really predicting the future? Is she destined to marry the boy she just met, and what is the mysterious orb that he's guarding? Why does she get the impression that there are dangerous creatures watching from the woods?

While Sam should be focusing on answering those questions, there is one other that makes them seem almost irrelevant: Is her mother planning on killing her and Violet?

Prophecy Girl tells the story of Samantha Winthrop. She just moved to Lacuna Valley and she's not happy about it. Her mothers made them move many times before, but she's just had it. But this is where things get interesting and she starts to question the things around her. When Nick enters her life it seems like she will be getting her answers, but does she really want to?

I have mixed feelings about Prophecy Girl. The idea behind the story was original and I liked the way Faith McKay plotted it out. But there were also parts I didn't like or even get. Sam's abused by her mother and I think it's very brave of the author to address such a heavy topic in her story. You're confronted with this at the beginning of the story and I could only think: why? Why does this happen? This question isn't really answered until way further into the story. And it doesn't happen once, but multiple times. Because it's such a heavy topic I would have like it when things had been explained earlier.

I liked the main characters in the story. It's told from Sam's perspective and although at the beginning she was a bit weak, she grew stronger when she had too. Together with Nick, a sweet boy, she discovers more about her destiny and why she has the power to look into the future.
My favorite character was Violet, Sam's 9 year old sister. She could be so funny at times and she lighted up the story for me.

I thought Faith McKay's writing style was okay, but I had to get used to it. Some parts in the story could have been left out in my opinion, but that is my personal preference. Overall, I thought the story was nice.
If you like an original story, than you want to give Prophecy Girl a chance.

Waiting on Wednesday (32)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. This week I'm waiting on

School Spirits by Rachel Hawkins

School Spirits (School Spirits, #1)Title: School Spirits
Author: Rachel Hawkins
Will be published on: May 14th, 2013 (Disney-Hyperion)
Series: School Spirits #1
Synopsis from Goodreads: Fifteen-year-old Izzy Brannick was trained to fight monsters. For centuries, her family has hunted magical creatures. But when Izzy’s older sister vanishes without a trace while on a job, Izzy's mom decides they need to take a break.

Izzy and her mom move to a new town, but they soon discover it’s not as normal as it appears. A series of hauntings has been plaguing the local high school, and Izzy is determined to prove her worth and investigate. But assuming the guise of an average teenager is easier said than done. For a tough girl who's always been on her own, it’s strange to suddenly make friends and maybe even have a crush.
Can Izzy trust her new friends to help find the secret behind the hauntings before more people get hurt?

I've read Hex Hall a while ago and absolutely loved it! Still have to read the rest of the series, but I can't wait for this spin-off!

What are you waiting on?

Top Ten Most Frustrating Characters Ever

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature created by The Broke and the Bookish. Every Tuesday has another topic and different bloggers give their top ten. I love making lists, so here's mine for this week!

This week topic is

Top Ten Most Frustrating Characters Ever

1. Zoey Redbird (House of Night series by P.C. & Kirsten Cast)
Twilight (Twilight, #1)When I first started the HoN series I liked it. Up until the fifth book. I don't know what changed there (me or the book/characters), but it started to annoy me, and not only Zoey. I gave up on the series when that kid died (was his name Eric?) singing a Glee song. Zoey Redbird is one of the most annoying characters I've ever read about, with the not wanting to leave her human boyfriend or anyone else for that matter. Somewhere it stopped being seeing the good in people in just being blind for someone else's flaws.

2. Bella (Twilight saga by Stephenie Meyer)
You'll find quite a few characters on my list from books I enjoyed. I read Twilight long before I started blogging and I'd never read reviews about it. I understand why people don't like the series, but I did (wouldn't be so sure if I liked them now though). I did had a struggle getting through book two. I know a break-up can be bad, but just get out into the world and don't whine all the time about it. It will get annoying.

3. Molly (Undeadly by Michele Vail)
I'm not even going to elaborate on this one. How ignorant can you be?

4. Ever (Evermore series by Alyson Noel)
Glow (Sky Chasers, #1)I had the same frustrations with her that I had with Bella. I liked reading the series, but Ever could just not make up her mind and that irritated me.

5. Kieran (Glow by Amy Kathleen Ryan)
I thought this book was amazing and I want to kick myself for not having read the second book yet! But Kieran... If you've read the book you probably know what I mean. He's very claiming for one and than the stuff he says at the end. Freaky!

6. Madison (L.A. Candy / The Fame Game series by Lauren Conrad)
YA is my favorite book genre in the world, but once in a while I like to mix things up. And that's were I read Chick Lit (or another genre). I liked the L.A. Candy series, but Madison was so irritating. I think this was Lauren Conrad's intention, so it worked. I've read The Fame Game and have Starstruck on my TBR pile. For a quick read these books are amazing.

7. Peris (Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld)
I've only read the first two books in the series, and the third on my TBR pile. I love this series, but Peris just annoyed me. Tally idolized him, but he's just lame. He didn't even dare to escape.

Unravel Me (Shatter Me, #2)8.  Juliette (Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi)
First of all, I love this series! (I want to make that clear;)). While I'm making this list I notice I mostly get annoyed by characters who can't make up their mind. And now that I think of it this is also what irritates me in real life. How hard can it be?! (But you know what they say, what annoys you in others is mostly something you're not allowed to do yourself, but you do all the time). It's the same with Juliette, especially in Unravel Me. I just wanted to shake her and scream at her. But I'm still in love with the series and can't wait to read Book 3!

Only eight for me this week! There are probably many more characters out there who annoyed me at some point, but this is what I could come up with for today!

What characters annoyed you?
