Review Breathless by Brigid Kemmerer

Breathless (Elemental, #2.5)Title: Breathless
Author: Brigid Kemmerer
Published: April 30th, 2013
Publisher: Kensington Teen
Pages: 65
Source: for review
Series: Elemental #2.5

Too many secrets. Not enough time.

Nick Merrick is supposed to be the level-headed one. The peacemaker. Since it’s just him and his three hotheaded brothers against the world, that’s a survival tactic.

But now he’s got problems even his brothers can’t help him survive.

His so-called girlfriend, Quinn, is going quick as mercury from daring to crazy. Meanwhile, Quinn’s dancer friend Adam is throwing Nick off balance, forcing him to recognize a truth he’d rather shove back into the dark.

He can feel it—-the atmosphere is sizzling. Danger is on the way. But whatever happens next, Nick is starting to find out that sometimes nothing you do can keep the peace.

Brigid Kemmerer has done it again! If you visit my blog more often you know how much I love this series. It just has everything I love: an amazing writing style, romance, powers, and don't forget the HOT guys! Breathless has it all!

This novella is about Nick. He's my favorite of the four brothers from the beginning of the series. His element is air and that's just cool to begin with! He's also the complete opposite of his twin brother Gabriel. In even more ways than you think!

Although this novella has only 65 pages so much happens. I won't give any spoilers, but that kissing scene at the end of the story? So hot!
But what I loved most about Breathless were the dancing scenes. Brigid Kemmerer just knows what I want. Dancing in my favorite series with cool powers and hot guys? I'll take that any day!

Spirit, the third book in the series, is coming out in just a couple of months and I so can't wait! It can't get here soon enough! I just saw on Goodreads there will also be a book #4 and #5. YEAH! More books in an amazing series with hot guys on the cover.
If you haven't read Storm (Elemental #1) yet I highly recommend it!

Read this immediately after it's published!

Review Spark by Brigid Kemmerer

Spark (Elemental, #2)Title: Spark
Author: Brigid Kemmerer
Published: August 28th, 2012 (K Teen)
Pages: 432
Source: for review
Series: Elemental #2
Rating: 5 stars
Synopsis from Goodreads: Gabriel Merrick plays with fire. Literally.
Sometimes he can even control it. And sometimes he can’t. Like the fire that killed his parents.
Gabriel has always had his brothers to rely on, especially his twin, Nick. But when an arsonist starts wreaking havoc on their town, all the signs point to Gabriel. Only he’s not doing it.
More than Gabriel’s pride is at stake -- this could cost him his family, maybe his life. And no one seems to hear him. Except a shy sophomore named Layne, a brainiac who dresses in turtlenecks and jeans and keeps him totally off balance. Layne understands family problems, and she understands secrets. She has a few of her own.
Gabriel can’t let her guess about his brothers, about his abilities, about the danger that’s right at his heels. But there are some risks he can’t help taking.
The fuse is lit…

This sequel is what really made me love this series. I loved Storm, Elemental and Fearless, but this book was close to perfect!

Before I started reading I was afraid Spark would be like Storm: same story, different MC. It's what I see a lot in series with different MC's. But Brigid Kemmerer is an amazing author and this is totally different from Chris's. That was what really made this series my new favorite! Next to the awesome idea behind the books and the amazing writing style!

In Spark Gabriel is the MC. The story starts a couple of weeks after the last events in Storm. Gabriel is feeling guilty about what's happened and he's more determined than ever to find a way to really control his fire power.
I love Gabriel! You meet him through the eyes of Chris, but I liked getting to know Gabriel through is own story. He's a tough boy and he tends to get in a lot of trouble. But he's also very sweet and he cares about the people around him! He blames himself for the fire their parents died in and that guilt makes things a lot worse.

Spark is also told from two point of views. The second is Layne, she's a shy girl, but she's some secrets of her own. She's has the sweetest little brother, Simon. It's his first year at a 'normal' school. He's deaf and the bullies won't leave him alone. He's good at sports, but he isn't given a fair chance.
Gabriel and Layne meet when she's to tutor him, after the new math teacher finds out about the switching places of Nick and Gabriel. And that's the most awesome thing about this series: NO insta-love! It's what makes their relationship feel real. They're so sweet together. Gabriel helps Simon with his sports and the bullies. I loved those fragments!

Gabriel turns towards Hunter to help him control his power. With all his brothers busy elsewhere. So they're practicing together by rescuing people from fires which are started in town. Hunter isn't my most favorite person in the series, but I liked that he did this for Gabriel, even though they get themselves in a lot of danger!

What made this book even better than the first was the tension. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time! When Layne was the POV I was curious what happened next with Gabriel and vice versa. Layne came across as this shy girl who needs to watch her deaf brother, but she has quite some secrets of her own. Throughout the story you discover more about her. At first I thought she was sweet and she is, but also a lot more than that!

I really loved this book, which I hope is obvious by know! So a huge thank you for Brigid Kemmerer for writing this book! And of course K Teen for publishing it. I can't wait for Spirit!

Mini review Fearless by Brigid Kemmerer

Fearless (Elemental, #1.5)Title: Fearless
Author: Brigid Kemmerer
Published: July 31st, 2012 (K Teen)
Pages: 59
Source: bought
Series: Elemental #1.5
Rating: 4 stars
Synopsis from Goodreads: Being a force of nature doesn’t keep you safe.
Hunter Garrity is used to watching his back. The kids at school sense something different about him. And they’re right.
Hunter has powers that have nothing to do with how hard he can throw a punch.
Maybe that’s what Clare Kasten is picking up. She’s shy, quiet, and intense, but she’s sought him out. There’s no telling what she wants from him.
But Hunter knows enough to sense a secret when it’s close. And getting close to Clare is a danger he’s ready to face…

I love love love this series! And although this story features one of my least favorite characters I still really enjoyed reading it!

Hunter is the main character in this enovella. I never really liked him in Storm. He turns out a bit better in Spark, but it will never be my friend.
I think he's a bit cold and although he cares about Becca, I never could shake the feeling he would turn 180 degrees.

So this is Hunter's story, about his dead and uncle, but also why Hunter became the way he is. In general I like this kind of enovella's. They tell you so much more about a character. I came to like him even a bit better and I loved reading about his love interest.

If you love this series, I definitely recommend reading this one!

Mini review Elemental by Brigid Kemmerer

Elemental (Elementals, #0.5)Title: Elemental
Author: Brigid Kemmerer
Published: March 27th, 2012 (K Teen)
Pages: 49
Source: bought
Series: Elemental #0.5
Rating: 5 stars
Synopsis from Goodreads: Earth, Fire, Air, Water they are more than you dream. As an air Elemental, 17-year-old Emily Morgan doesn't have much power. That's okay she knows what happens to kids who do.
Like Michael Merrick. He's an earth Elemental, one with enough power to level cities. Which makes him sexy, dangerous, and completely off limits. At least according to Emily's family.
But her summer job puts her in close contact with Michael, and neither of them can help the attraction them can help the attraction they feel. When forces of nature like theirs collide, one misstep could get someone killed. Because Emily's family doesn't just want her to stay away from him.
They want him dead.

After reading Storm I couldn't wait to read more of this series! And Kobo was so nice to put Elemental as a free copy right after my copy of Storm! Yay! So I immediate read it!

If you've read Storm you know the short version of Micheal's story and his encounter with Emily. This tells the complete story from their point of view. And I loved it! In Storm he's a bit distant and more a parent than a brother, but after reading Elemental I absolutely love him! He was such a sweet boy!

Although this is the story before Storm, it's better to read after, because it contains spoilers. I also think this story is better if you read it in the 'wrong' order. You get to know Micheal through Chris and Becca in Storm, and it makes this story more special when you get to know Micheal in a different way.

It's only 49 pages and I would have liked it if it was a lot longer! If you love the Elemental series you have to read this. You'll not be disappointed!

Review Storm by Brigid Kemmerer

Title: Storm
Author: Brigid Kemmerer
Published: April 24th, 2012 (Kensington)
Pages: 353
Source: bought
Series: Elemental #1
Rating: 4.5 stars
Synopsis from Goodreads: Becca Chandler is suddenly getting all the guys - all the ones she doesn't want. Ever since her ex-boyfriend spread those lies about her. Then she saves Chris Merrick from a beating in the school parking lot. Chris is different. Way different: he can control water just like his brothers can control fire, wind, and earth. They're powerful. Dangerous. Marked for death.
And now that she knows the truth, so is Becca.
Secrets are hard to keep when your life's at stake. When Hunter, the mysterious new kid around school, turns up with a talent for being in the wrong place at the right time, Becca thinks she can trust him. But then Hunter goes head-to-head with Chris, and Becca wonders who's hiding the most dangerous truth of all.
The storm is coming.

Meet my new favorite series!
I had Storm on my wish list for quite some time, but I wanted to lower my TBR pile, so I hadn't bought it yet. When I saw Spark (the second book in the series) up on Netgalley, I requested it and got approved. Can you think of a better excuse to buy a book? No one could say now that I couldn't buy it. (That's what I told myself anyway).

This is on of those book that makes you want to hit yourself for not reading it sooner! So amazing! Brigid Kemmerer has an awesome writing style (and most of you will know by now I'm a sucker for a good writing style). You get sucked into the story right away and it doesn't let you go before you finish it! I got out of bed earlier to read this book! Yes, it was that good.

I love the idea behind the book. Four brothers who can each control a different element. Chris is the MC in the first part of the series. He controls water. His POV is alternated with Becca's. She saves him from a fight in the school parking lot and they're drawn to each other, but not in an insta-love kinda way. She's pulled into Chris' world and the danger lurking there. They must help each other to be save again.
It's not a superhero story, luckily. Chris is struggling with his powers. He knows he has great potential, just not how great. And losing control could mean losing his life.

Becca is such an amazing girl! I just loved her. She saves Chris, although she barely knows him. She's picked on because of something she did, but you don't find out what that is until the end of the story. The way she deals with it was admirable. She keeps her head high and ignores them, although as the reader you know she's struggling with it. And than there is her long lost father, who's in town all of a sudden. That can't be a coincidence, right?

A story works better for me if you're not thrown in and everything happening way to fast. Brigid Kemmerer knows what she's doing! The story begins with the fight in the parking lot and it's a good beginning. You're introduced to the MC's in a characteristic way. Becca as a bit shy girl, who can stand up for herself and others. Chris as a powerful guy, but not invincible. The story gradually moves on from there. You get to know the characters better and you learn about the world their living in, but even at the end of the book you don't know everything. In a good way, you'll be curious for more. There's happening a lot, there's enough tension to not want to put the book down, but there isn't happening to much. Which is a good thing!

By now I've also read Elemental (#0.5), Fearless (#1.5) and Spark (#2) and I loved them all! Reviews will be posted soon. With each book I loved the series more. I would definitely recommend it!

And did you see that cover? So pretty :)
